Description

Robert E. Peary

ALS signed “R. E. Peary,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, Eagle Island, South Harpswell, Maine letterhead, July 29, 1904. Letter to renowned Italian artist Albert Operti, in full: “I have your note. I can furnish Mr. Shields an article of 1,000 words on either of the subjects noted by him, with three or four illustrations, for $50—I should know his decision as soon as possible. Am glad you have seen Mr. Stokes. I am still your debtor & will liquidate as soon as I get my check for the Harper’s Magazine article. I rather hope to be in N. Y. next week. Mrs. Peary joins me in best regards to Mrs. Operti & yourself.” In fine condition, with a crease to lower right corner and a partial separation to lower adjoining fold. Operti accompanied Robert Peary on his 1896 expedition to Cape York Greenland, a trip which resulted in hundreds of Arctic sketches which would be the basis for much of his later work. Provenance: The Everett Fisher Collection. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
