ALS signed “Varina Jefferson Davis,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 5, no date but postmarked April 12, 1906. Letter to Mrs. Micheler, in part: “My husband’s autographs are extremely rare: though thousands are sold, they are mine. For many years I wrote at his dictation all his letters, signed all his papers etc, and no one knew the difference as I had practiced his calligraphy so he, even did not recognize the difference between the two.” Partial separations to right edge of mailing fold, some scattered staining, and the vertical mailing fold passing through the extreme top of the signature, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Davis’s own hand. Provenance: The Everett Fisher Collection. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
