Description

Washington Irving

ALS, two pages, 4.75 x 7.25, November 12, no year. Letter to his neighbor and niece’s husband, Moses H. Grinnell, in full: "I would advise you to stockade the inside of your ice house with chestnut piles instead of planking it. Plank rots within a few years but chestnut piles would last a long time. Locust piles would be much better, but much dearer. The [house] would last until Bub. was an old man and long after. We must get up some kind of fence between us to protect my northern frontier. Since the old fence and the hedge have been removed my territories are subject to continual invasion from the vagabond cattle which infest your grounds. The East and South Gables of your house are up and look well. If the weather is good the other two Gables will be up in the course of the week.” In fine condition, with a crease to lower right corner and trivial show-through from writing to opposing sides. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
