Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as ‘gerrymandering.’ Partly-printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 8.75 x 13.5, July 6, 1810. As governor of Massachusetts, Gerry appoints Ebenezer Brooks of Harwich “to be one of our Justices of the Peace, within and for the County of Barnstable.” Signed in the upper left below the seal by Governor Gerry and countersigned by Secretary of the Commonwealth Benjamin Homans. The crisp white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains fully intact. Expertly double-matted and framed with a portrait and nameplate to an overall size of 21 x 20.5. Intersecting folds and some scattered staining, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
