Manuscript DS, one page, 7.75 x 11.75, September 11, 1784. As governor of Massachusetts, Hancock certifies “that Joseph Greenleaf of Boston is a Justice of the Peace within & for the County of Suffolk in the Commonwealth.” Neatly signed at the conclusion by Governor Hancock and countersigned by John Avery as secretary. The white paper seal and ribbon affixed to the upper left remain intact. Handsomely mounted, matted, and framed to an overall size of 12.75 x 16.5. Expected document wear, toning to edges, and scattered soiling, otherwise fine condition. The man being appointed, Joseph Greenleaf, was the brother-in-law of Declaration signer Robert Treat Paine and was himself a politically active writer, contributing to the Massachusetts Spy and the Royal American Magazine. A wonderful official Massachusetts document issued shortly after the Revolution, enhanced by this interesting connection. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
