Description

Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler

Color satin-finish 16.25 x 11 photo of a painting by Jamie Iverson depicting the famous Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler incident, signed in black ink by both airmen, “Franz Stigler, JG27, JV44” and “Charles L. Brown, Pilot, ‘Ye Olde Pub.’” Also signed in the lower right in silver ink by the artist. In fine condition, with some spotting and soiling to skyline and the signatures a shade light. On December 20, 1943, Brown’s B-17 Flying Fortress, nicknamed ‘Ye Olde Pub,’ was riddled by German firepower after a successful bombing run on the city of Bremen. Tailing him on his arduous return flight was Luftwaffe ace Franz Stigler, who, rather than shooting down the crippled bomber, allowed the plane and its injured crew to fly back to RAF Seething airfield. Forty years after their fateful encounter, the two men developed a close friendship after Brown managed to successfully track down Stigler at his home in Canada. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
