Description

Theodore Roosevelt

TLS, one page, 7 x 7.75, Police Department of the City of New York letterhead, August 17, 1896. Letter to W. P. Preble, in full: “I will direct an immediate investigation to be made into that matter.” Affixed to the front of an off-white 7.25 x 9.5 folder with signatures of five other notable 20th century social figures affixed inside, including: Irvin S. Cobb, Jane Addams, James W. Gerard, Elihu Root, and one other. Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), trimmed edges, and slight toning and creasing to edges, otherwise fine condition. Roosevelt served as the president of the Board of Police Commissioners of New York City from 1895 to 1897. During his tenure in that position, he radically reformed a notoriously corrupt police force, implementing measures which included the hiring of officers by merit rather than nepotism, enforcing a new disciplinary code, and providing standardized pistols to policemen. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
