Union general (1813–1864) who was killed by Confederate sharpshooters at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, ironically while berating his men for hiding from enemy fire. Civil War–dated ALS signed “John Sedgwick, Maj General,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.5, Head Quarters 6th Army Corps letterhead, May 15, 1863. Letter to Colonel J. T. Sprague. In part: “I have the honor to recommend for your consideration Capt W. J. Slidell…for the appointment of Col in one of your N. Y. Regts. Capt. Slidell is serving on the staff of Brig. General Wharton, as Asst Inspect. Genl. and is familiar with all the regimental duties, has seen much service in the field, and is a zealous and faithful officer.” Triple-matted and framed with a facsimile copy of the front of the letter and a photo of Sedgwick to an overall size of 18 x 14, with a window in the backing for viewing the opposite side of the letter. In fine condition, with brushing to one word in the letter and a crack to one edge of the glass on the reverse of the frame. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
