Description

Andrew Carnegie

ALS, one page both sides, 5.5 x 9, July 1, 1905. Letter to W. R. Barnhart, written from Skibo Castle in Scotland. In full: “The first Grand House I ever was invited to spend Sunday in was that of Will A. Stokes of Greensburg Penna. I was then I think seventeen. I admired his Grand Library, upon a marble ‘book,’ centre of fireplace arch, there was carved these words from Bacon: ‘He that cannot reason is a fool, He that will not, a bigot, He that dare not, a slave.’ I have copied this for every one of my Libraries in my various homes. I have dared to reason & reject all that it disapproves and to follow only ‘the judge within,’ conscience, the product of divine reason.” Central vertical and horizontal folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), a couple small edge separations, and overall toning, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a 1929 newspaper clipping quoting this letter. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
