Description

Fantastic 1918 portrait of the newly emerged Tramp

Remarkable vintage pearl-finish 7.5 x 9.5 photo of Chaplin as the Tramp by Witzel of Los Angeles, signed in fountain pen, “Sincerely yours, Charie Chaplin, March 25th, 1918.” Uniformly trimmed edges, slight rubbing, edgewear, and surface impressions, and some spreading to the signature, otherwise fine condition. Although his trademark vagrant had already starred in a handful of short films, the Tramp’s Hollywood momentum began to surge after Chaplin signed with First National Pictures in 1918. In his initial year under contract, Chaplin made three movies—A Dog’s Life, The Bond, and Shoulder in Arms. Given its proximity to the Tramp’s emergence as a marquee name, this is an exceptional portrait of the silent era’s most recognizable character. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
