Description

An invention for making “Rake stales, Hoe, Broom, and other Handles”

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 11 x 15, October 14, 1835. A patent issued to “James Haven, a citizen of the United States, [who] hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement in the Lathe for turning Rake stales, Hoe, Broom, and other Handles.” Signed at the conclusion by President Jackson and countersigned by Secretary of State John Forsyth and Attorney General Benjamin F. Butler. The document retains its fully intact embossed white paper seal and ribbons. Impressively mounted, matted, and framed with a Currier and Ives print to an overall size of 42 x 30. In fine condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature) and light soiling. Haven’s invention was used in the manufacture of hand rakes in Newport, New Hampshire, which used lathes powered by water wheels; this was an important business in the town for many years to come. An appealing format from an innovative period in America’s Industrial Revolution. Oversized. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
