Bergman discusses 1967’s More Stately Mansions

ALS signed “Ingrid,” two onionskin pages, 8.25 x 10.5, La Grange aux Moines letterhead, April 25, 1967. Letter to theatre director Jose Quintero. In part: “I left Rome yesterday and as I flew away I took up the script. I think I told you I can’t do two things at the same time, I can’t be Robin’s mother and Simon’s mother! So I studied the new scene and immediately they gave me a glass of champagne, I knocked it over the script, which I thought was a good sign!…I think the best thing is I send you back the scene with my added dialogue, cuts and crosses…We must have the funny line about—‘The King of France, now Napoleon, next the Tsar of Russia’—I think it’s funny, so maybe others do, and we are short of laughs in this story!!…I suppose we’ll cut more in rehearsals.” In fine condition, with scattered creases and very light dampstaining to the lower left of the first page. Bergman appeared in the Quintero-directed More Stately Mansions, adapted from an unfinished draft by Eugene O’Neill, which premiered as the inaugural production at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles on April 12, 1967. After eight preview shows over the course of six months—during which they clearly continued to revise and refine the script—the play debuted on Broadway in October 1967 and had a successful run of 142 performances. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
