British Whig statesman (1712–1770) who served as treasurer of the Royal Navy before becoming prime minister. He is best known for introducing the Stamp Act in 1765, which sparked outrage in colonial America and reverberated over the course of the next decade in the slogan ‘no taxation without representation,’ a leading cause of the Revolution.
