Description

Regrets from the king’s would-be assassin

Chief conspirator in an attempt on the life of King Louis-Philippe, in which he shot a 25-barrel gun of his own design during the annual review of the Paris National Guard. Eighteen were killed, but the king escaped with but a graze. ALS in French, signed “Fieschi,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 10, January 1836. Untranslated letter to his lawyer Francois-Marie Patorni, written from prison while awaiting trial for his attempted assassination of the king. Fieschi reflects on the unintended deaths he has caused and concedes the inevitability of a death sentence; but, after all, he declares that he is still a man of qualities. In very good condition, with repaired partial separations to intersecting folds, scattered soiling, and a few stray ink blots. Patorni defended him at trial, which became a nationwide sensation. Reveling in his celebrity status, he named his accomplices, displayed much bravado, and believed he would ultimately be pardoned. He was condemned to death, and was guillotined on February 19, 1836. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
