Description

Emperor Meiji confers the “Order of the Golden Kite” for military bravery

Handsome DS in Japanese, one page, 23 x 17.75, circa 1890–1912. Untranslated document in which the emperor of Japan confers the Fifth Class, Order of the Golden Kite; the recipient’s name has been clipped out. Rolled and in its original wooden presentation box, which has one end detached. Aforementioned excision of the recipient’s name in the document and expected document wear, otherwise fine condition.

Established in 1890 by Emperor Meiji, the Order of the Golden Kite was a military award commemorating the mythic Jimmu Tenno, the ‘Romulus of Japan.’ It was awarded to soldiers and military officers who demonstrated bravery, leadership, or command in battle. This is one of the few orders made exclusively for the Japanese military, while most others could be given to civilians, diplomats, and other officials including those from other countries. The majority of these Order of the Golden Kites awards were given in the lower sixth or seventh class, making this middle-class example scarcer than usual. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
