Letter to Mr. Black, in full: “May the ink in my bottle turn to Old Crow on the day that I hesitate to use it at the desire of you and the still dear ‘World.’ You can bet your variegated sacks that I will send you an Easter story for the sake of old times and present good will. I suppose about 2000 words; and that same time within three weeks or so will be time enough. I am going on a week or 10 days trip about the last of this week, but I can get the story to you sure by the middle of March. Unless you advise me to do the contrary I will consider the time all right. Be glad to do it for you. All sorts of regards.” In fine condition, with erased pencil notations and a spot of soiling. Laced with Henry’s characteristic wit, this letter includes references to both his passion for short-story writing and his appetite for drink, a vice that would ultimately consume him just three years after this letter was written.
