Letter to Mrs. Lippencott, in full: “The date of my public declaration in favor of the enlistment of Negro troops was Nov. 13, 1861. You will find it in McPherson’s Political History, 1st edition, 1864, pp. 414, 415, & 416. On the 4th of the same month however I was in New York, where John Cochrane made a speech, which I endorsed, on the subject of the enlistment of the Negro. I am told that the Tribune & Herald of Nov. 5, 1861 contains a report of the remarks of Chochrane [sic] and myself. These newspapers of the 14th of Nov. 1861 will also furnish you with some information on the subject.” Two areas of paper loss to vertical fold and tape-repaired tears to expected mailing folds, otherwise fine condition.
