Description

Long before announcing his own candidacy, JFK responds to “interest in being a delegate to the 1960 convention”

TLS signed “Jack,” one page, 8 x 10.5, United States Senate letterhead, May 14, 1959. Letter to Al Zabriskie of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives. In part: “Thank you for your recent letter stating your position relative to recently conducted polls. I certainly appreciate the confidence you expressed in me and your thoughtfulness in writing concerning this. Regarding your interest in being a delegate to the 1960 convention, I am making this known to State Chairman John M. ‘Pat’ Lynch. In view of Pat’s position in this matter, I suggest you also make your interest known directly to him.” In fine condition. Kennedy would not announce his candidacy for the presidency until January 2, 1960, nearly eight months after this letter. He went on to earn the nomination on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention, narrowly defeating Lyndon B. Johnson after Robert Kennedy secured critical delegates at the last minute. A superb pre-presidential letter. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
