Description

Desirable presidential correspondence with a senator

ALS as president, signed “James K. Polk,” one page, 8 x 10, June 9, 1846. Letter to Senator Lewis Cass, in full: “I desire to see you this afternoon. If it shall be convenient for you to do so, I will thank you to call about 6 o’clock.” Affixed at the bottom of the letter is an ink signature, “Yours truly, Franklin Pierce,” on an off-white 4 x 1 slip clipped from a letter. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of Polk’s signature), scattered foxing and toning, and show-through from adhesive to reverse of the Pierce slip. Pierce had befriended Polk during their time together in Congress, and as president Polk helped advance Pierce’s political career by appointing him attorney general of New Hampshire. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
