Description

“I have requested Major McIntosh to give the commanding officer there some help to keep the peace—and to beat the Seminoles, if they must be beaten”

ALS, one page, 7.75 x 12.5, April 4, 1817. Letter to David B. Mitchell, superintendent of Indian Affairs. In part: “The prospect of Pensacola being shortly assailed by the Spanish revolutionists seems to have vanished. From information which I have recently received…corroborative of the continued hostility of the Seminole Indians; and feeling some apprehension for the safety of the little settlement upon the Chattahoochie, I have requested Major McIntosh to give the commanding officer there some help to keep the peace—and to beat the Seminoles, if they must be beaten. Hearing that you have undertaken the herculean task of unbarbarising the red people near us, I enclose you a copy of…a letter from…who appears to be a British agent; and who will do no good, but perhaps much harm, by his affected philanthropy. What has England to do with out Southern Boundary? Who authorized ‘his Britannic Majesty’ to intermeddle with our affairs? Who appointed him the guardian of the Indians in this country?” In fine condition, with mild foxing. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
