Description

Ambrose E. Burnside

Union general and one-time commander of the Army of the Potomac (1824–1881); the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word ‘sideburns.’ Civil War-dated ALS signed “A. E. Burnside,” one page, 4.75 x 7.5, August 17, 1864. Letter to General Patrick, in part: “Thank you for your photograph—it is excellent—Please accept enclosed.” Scattered soiling, restored paper loss to upper right corner, and a tape repair to reverse along fold, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a carte-de-visite portrait of Burnside identified in the lower border in an unknown hand and affixed to a 5 x 7 sheet. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
