Four days after announcing his departure from the Nation of Islam on March 8, Malcolm X established Muslim Mosque, Inc., an Islamic organization designed to support the African-American community and propagate the social, economic, and political philosophies of Black Nationalism. Although his new foundation was headquartered at Harlem’s 113th street mosque, Malcolm X would spend much of his remaining life traveling abroad. After completing his pilgrimage to Mecca in April 1964 and spending significant time in Africa, where he met with nearly all of the continent’s prominent leaders, his philosophy on the white presence in Muslim culture began to evolve, causing confusion with many of his followers in the states. Signed during this critical period of enlightenment and transformation—just nine months before his assassination—this is an exceedingly rare letter from one of history’s most divisive and important civil rights leaders.
