Description

Madalyn Murray O’Hair

Activist (1919–1995) who founded the American Atheists organization, serving as its president from 1963 through 1986. In 1995, she was kidnapped and murdered along with her son and granddaughter by a former employee. TLS signed “Madalyn O’Hair,” three pages, 8.5 x 11, Society of Separationists letterhead, October 31, 1967. Lengthy letter to Rachel Gallagher, an editorial associate for Esquire. In part: “I am absolutely, completely, and inexorably against the use of drugs, of almost every kind…except for those in use which are proven as capable of conquering disease…L.S.D. and other hallucinatory drugs allegedly ‘turn on’ an enhanced evaluation of life. In this context, I can see where 70 year olds who have had some living experience to test this against—would turn on, and have a ball. To see the youngsters do this—leaves me cold.” A paperclip mark and impression to the upper left and a few light stains, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
