Description

The esteemed “Order of the Sacred Treasure”

Beautiful DS in Japanese, signed by Hirohito as emperor of Japan, one page, 23 x 17.75, May 14, 1931. Untranslated document in which the emperor of Japan confers the Second Class, Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star; the recipient’s name has been clipped out. Includes the Star of the Order of the Sacred Treasure award badge, measuring 3″ in diameter, in its original presentation case. Also includes the original wooden box for the document. Aforementioned excision of the recipient’s name in the document and some wear to the enamel on the badge, otherwise overall fine condition.

The insignia of the order incorporates symbols for the three imperial treasures, each represented in the badge: the central eight-pointed silver star represents the Yata Mirror, so sacred that not even the emperor is allowed to look at it; the wreath of red-enameled dots represents the the Yasakani Jewel; and the forty white enameled rays represent the emperor’s personal sword. Established as the Order of the Meiji in 1888 by Hirohito’s grandfather, the Order of the Sacred Treasure is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in a wide variety of civil or military services, ranging from research fields, to social work, to state and local government. These documents, by which the Emperor himself honors a citizen, become a part of the recipient’s family legacy and rarely leave Japan. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
