Nixon won the election in a landslide, taking 49 of the 50 states to win 520 electoral votes against George McGovern’s 17. In Barry County specifically, Nixon received 64% of the vote. It was through the questionable financial activities of the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, the official fundraising organization for Nixon's campaign, that the Watergate scandal was first exposed.
