Description

Joyce Kilmer

American writer (1886–1918), best known for the much-anthologized poem ‘Trees,’ who was killed at the Second Battle of Marne at the age of 31. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, The New York Times letterhead, September 14, 1916. Letter to Eric Schuler, in full: “In the Sun for the last Saturday, September 10, there was a publicity note rather seriously reflecting on the Authors League, and I think it ought to be called officially to the League’s notice, if this has not already been done. It had to do with Theodore’s Dreiser’s new book, and was to the effect that Authors League of America gave it a clean bill of health, a committee officially delegated by the League having examined it and found it innocuous. Of course this was simply a publicity note from the John Lane offices, but on what was it based? Surely no committee has power to give the League’s endorsement to a book, nor is the League qualified to sit in judgment on moral problems. I have seen nothing in the Bulletin about this affair, and will greatly appreciate it if you can spare the time to let me know the facts of the case.” Intersecting folds, small tears to edges, two missing corner tips, a few light spots of foxing, and an office stamp to lower right (passing through the second half of last name), otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
