TLS signed “G. Bernard Shaw,” one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, January 5, 1949. Letter to Fanny Holtzmann, in part: “The Public Trustee would not accept a bequest of a copyright to exploit for the benefit of the State. There must be a private beneficiary. Therefore, in my will, after consulting the Public Trustee on the point, I have been careful to leave several annuities to old servants and the residue to the British Museum, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and the National Gallery of Ireland, with certain precise instructions as to the financing of a Phonetic English alphabet. As these conditions are finite and destinated the Public Trustee will accept the trust and control of the business until the expiration of the copyrights makes an end of the business.” Shaw makes a pair of handwritten emendations to the text. Intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), a tear to left edge, and a few stray ink marks, otherwise fine condition. Holtzmann was a pioneering female lawyer in the motion picture and theatre industry whose notable clientele included Edmund Goulding, William Randolph Hearst, and Princess Irina Alexandrovna of Russia.
