Description

ALS signed “T. Carlyle,” one page both sides, 5 x 8.5, January 27, 1853. Letter to B. B. Woodward, in part: “Accept many thanks for your massive and splendid volume on the History of Wales, which arrived safe last night, according to your kind premonition and intention. I know nothing of Wales hitherto…and am happy to have access to surer and fuller information on the subject. The book seems to abound in curious knowledge, and is full of illustrations. I should think it must be welcome to a great many readers. I wish you heartily well thro’ your next enterprise, the Opus Major, and more and more success in turning to account, for yourself and your fellow creatures, the gifts you have got. With many thanks for your kindness to me in particular.” In very good condition, with partial separations to intersecting folds (a few neatly repaired), missing lower right corner tip, and light show-through from writing on opposing sides. The writing remains clear and dark throughout. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
