Black of the Edison Institute, in part: “The dog house referred to in Paul Jones’ letter was never at 7 Hawthorn Street when we lived there. It was built in 1917 at my home in Oakwood. After the death of my St. Bernard dog, Lottie Jones asked for it for one of her boy’s dogs and I gave it to her. It was not given to Paul personally. I do not consider the house of any importance whatever because it was never at Hawthorn Street during the time we were there. If the house did belong to Paul, and not to Lottie, as Paul now claims, he had no right to leave it on your property. I would suggest that you tell Paul that it was no mistake on your part. Everything that was not removed was supposed to belong to the Fords. You may tell Paul that if he thinks he has any claim for the house he should see me.” In fine condition, with staple holes to upper left corner. Dedicated to preserving this history of the American people ‘as written into things their hands made and used,’ Henry Ford purchased the Wright Brothers home and bicycle shop from Lottie Jones, the family’s longtime servant, in 1937, moving both buildings from Dayton, Ohio, to his sprawling museum complex at Greenfield Village in Michigan.
