Description

Leslie R. Groves

Army officer (1896–1970) who headed the Manhattan Project and oversaw the construction of the Pentagon. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Remington Rand letterhead, October 3, 1955. Letter to Edward M. Coffman, in full: “This is in reply to the question contained in your recent letter. The greatest problem faced in the development of the atomic bomb always seemed to be the one that was facing us at the moment. As I look back on it, however, I can not help but feel that it was the uncertainty, which lasted for about two years, as to whether we would be successful in our attempts to develop a suitable barrier for the gas diffusion process. Wrapped up in this was the necessity, because of the time element, to drive ahead with the construction of the processing plant itself. This meant the expenditure of several hundreds of millions without any assurance that the basic barrier could be develped [sic].” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
