Immediately after securing his first elected political position in 1900—holding the seat of Oldham in Parliament—Churchill began his first speaking tour, receiving significant attention for his rhetorical skills. He also almost immediately began to break with the Conservative Party; by 1904, he had crossed the aisle completely and become a Liberal.
