Description

Important appointment for the International Monetary Fund

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 23 x 19, March 7, 1961. President Kennedy appoints George W. Ball as “United States Alternate Governor of the International Monetary Fund for a term of five years, and United States Alternate Governor of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for a term of five years.” Boldly signed at the conclusion by President Kennedy and countersigned by Secretary of State Dean Rusk. The crisply embossed white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains fully intact and in excellent condition. In fine condition. Ball's experience in international economics began in World War II, during which he served as an official of the Lend Lease program. After the war he assisted the French government with its economic recovery and negotiations regarding the Marshall Plan. A key figure in Democratic circles, he played an integral role in Adlai Stevenson's campaigns of the 1950s and went on to serve in several different capacities in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, culminating in a stint as US ambassador to the United Nations. Exceptionally clean and crisp, this is a superior example of an appointment from early in the Kennedy administration. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.
