TLS as president signed “Wm H. Taft,” one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, June 19, 1912. Letter to General Felix Agnus, in full: “I want to send you just a word of thanks for your telegram of yesterday. Your support and sympathy in this crisis are very comforting.” In fine condition, with a central horizontal fold (passing through a single letter of the signature) and light but noticeable feathering to the signature. Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope and a pair of telegrams between Taft and Agnus. The Taft telegram reads, in part: “I fear that the news that Roosevelt has released anybody or anything is without foundation[,] report is already denied.” Written during the Republic National Convention, in which Taft outmaneuvered Roosevelt and La Follette to regain control of the GOP, this letter reveals the president’s distress over “this crisis” that was dividing his party. The power struggle between Taft and Roosevelt—formerly close friends and political allies—resulted in the latter’s disavowal of the Republicans and the formation of the Progressive Party. Splitting the vote in the subsequent presidential election, neither candidate could defeat the unified Democratic Party, leading to Woodrow Wilson’s easy victory.
