Description

Bill Tilden

Famed American tennis player (1893–1953) whose major tournament victories number in the dozens, including six consecutive years as US Singles Champion. ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, undated but postmarked August 8, 1949. Letter written from prison to Marrion Anderson, mother of his protege Bratto Anderson, in full: “Your letter just arrived and I am answering at once & will try to get it off as a favor this afternoon. First of all—much as I want to see you alone this week—it is almost impossible and I do not want to ask favors. A week Sunday the Brat will be at Pasadena & we will call Noel off & can talk everything out then. I see that there is only one thing to do & I will do it provided Bratto cannot fit it with Wheeler. I will do my best and go ahead with the tennis set up even if he is forced into the frat. I will give my best & try like hell. Don’t blame me if I fail. Don’t worry—I’ll stay by you & the Kid 100% if I can & this will take the steam off until we can talk alone a week Sunday. I am sorry but I really don’t want to ask the favor of a special visit & I know you understand.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope and a photo of Tilden playing tennis. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA.
