Handwritten homework assignment, one lined page, 8.5 x 11, signed at the top in blue ballpoint, “Eddie Cochran, English VI, October 19, 1953.” Headed “Exploring your dictionary,” Cochran pens lengthy responses to several questions about the use and history of dictionaries. In part: “A dictionary is called a short cut to information because it is the most valuable single reference for people wanting to learn to speak and write correct English…Words are as important as manners because we are likely to judge a person’s intelligence and personality by the way he speaks.” The assignment is graded at the top in red pencil with a very good score of 96 points.
