Description

1842 naval commission

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 10.5 x 8.25, June 14, 1842. President Tyler appoints James Lawrence Blair as “a Midshipman in the Navy of the United States.” Prominently signed at the conclusion by President Tyler and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Abel P. Upshur. The document is blindstamped with a seal in the lower left. In very good condition, with three toned vertical folds (one passing through a single letter of the signature), scattered creases, and mild foxing. Blair moved to San Francisco in 1849, where he established the first steamship line on the Sacramento River. A desirable and uncommon format. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.
