Description

The Republican lashes out against “destructive aspects” of his successor’s “New Deal”

TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, November 17, 1938. Letter to Mrs. J. Hector McNeal. In part: “It was very good of you to write to me as to the contribution I have made concerning the outcome of this campaign. We have to congratulate ourselves. Nearly every place where the Republicans fought the issue systematically against the New Deal, they met with success. And our success has been so great that with sense and courage from now on we ought to be able to end the destructive aspects of this episode in American history in 1940.” In fine condition, with a light area of toning to the lower right corner.

After being voted out of office in favor of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, Hoover became one of the nation’s most prominent spokesmen against the New Deal and FDR’s domestic policies. Hoover’s presidency had been characterized by the Great Depression, and throughout the 1930s he opposed every substantive measure taken for economic relief, attacking the ‘radical influence’ in Washington. The 1938 midterm elections were held on November 8, 1938, and the Democratic Party suffered a substantial defeat, losing 72 seats in the House of Representatives and seven seats in the Senate. Despite these losses at the hands of Hoover’s Republicans, Democrats still maintained majorities in both houses of Congress. Excellent political content from the former president. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA.
