This dates to rather early in his career as a professor of economics, though he would be greatly affected by the loss of his father two months later and increasingly prone to depression, nervousness, and insomnia, making it difficult for him to fulfill his duties. During this period Weber was conducting some of his earliest empirical social research, which included three investigations of agricultural and industrial labor conditions, worker attitude, and work histories, and a fourth study concerning the psychological aspects of factory work. It is also interesting to note that while Max Weber was interested in the social conditions of factories and manufacturing work, his brother Alfred approached the same subject from an economic point of view, developing theories of the location of industry and geographical cost-effectiveness.
