Description

Gabriel C. Wharton and Robert Ransom, Jr

Civil War–dated endorsements by Confederate officers Wharton and Ransom on the reverse of a letter originally written to Captain C. A. DeRussey by a lieutenant colonel in the 30th Virginia Battalion requesting that a company under his command be reassigned due to poor discipline, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, October 26, 1863. Wharton’s autograph endorsement, in full: “Respectfully for’d tho men alluded to are the dismounted men of Col. Peter’s Regt. G. C. Wharton, Brig. Genl.” Ransom’s autograph endorsement is penned below, in part: “Although the annoyance to which Col. Clarke is subjected to is fully appreciated, it is not expedient to make the change just now. As soon as possible Col. C. shall be relieved. R. Ransom, Jr., Maj. Genl." In very good condition, with small tape-repaired edge separations to folds, scattered creases and toning, and show-through from writing to opposing sides. Wharton (1824–1906) served in Longstreet's operations against Knoxville and participated in the Overland Campaign; Ransom (1828–1892) led his division to great success in the Battle of Fredericksburg and later commanded cavalry under Jubal A. Early. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
