Description

Rare Spurr portrait of the mysterious ‘Father of the Western’

Silent film star, director, producer, and screenwriter (1882–1924). Vintage pearl-finish 7.25 x 9.25 portrait of Ince by Melbourne Spurr, signed in fountain pen, “Thos. H. Ince.” Double-matted to an overall size of 12.5 x 14.5. In very good to fine condition, with scattered creases and surface marks. Though his death was announced to be of natural causes, rumors of foul play were widely circulated, with many claiming that William Randolph Hearst accidentally shot and killed Ince during a party on board his yacht. Given Ince’s importance in Hollywood history and unusual early death, his autographic material is both very collectible and extremely rare. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
