In full: “Because of your connection with the invitation to go to Valley Forge I hoped I might find some way to accept it. I do not see now how I can make it possible to go. I wish you would express my sincere appreciation to the people who did us the honor to extend the invitation." A carbon of Johnson’s response to the letter is affixed to the reverse of the top left corner. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, and a couple spots of light soiling.
