Description

Early 1830 trade agreement with the Sultan of Borneo

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.25 x 10.25, July 12, 1854. President Pierce directs the secretary of state “to affix the Seal of the United States to my Proclamation of the Convention, between the United States & His Highness the Sultan of Borneo, of the 23d June 1830.” In fine condition, with some mild spotting and light edge dings. The US and Borneo signed a treaty on June 23, 1830, which set forth terms for trade between the nations, exempting imports and exports from duties; in the agreement, the sultan also agreed to aid any American ships wrecked off the coast of Borneo. An intriguing early trade agreement between the United States and the exotic Southeast Asian island nation. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
