Description

Uncommon ship’s papers for a Boston-to-California voyage

Partial self-contained partly-printed DS as president, signed “Z. Taylor,” one page, 10 x 15.5, November 16, 1849. Two panels of a four-language ship’s papers (English and Dutch) issued to “George H. Willis master and commander of the Ship called Hannibal…lying at present in the port of Boston bound for California and laden with merchandise.” Signed in the right panel by Taylor and countersigned by Secretary of State John M. Clayton. Document is affixed by its left edge to an 11.5 x 15.5 off-white heavy sheet. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, a few small repairs to folds on reverse, slightly trimmed edges, and a bit of show-through from docketing on reverse. The seals are intact and only slightly worn. The Hannibal set sail from Boston on November 26 arriving in 157 days via Cape Horn. Any Taylor presidential document is quite uncommon, as he served only 16 months before he died suddenly on July 9, 1850. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
