Description

Rare page signed by Marie Curie and her two daughters

Ink signatures of Marie Curie, “M. Curie,” and her daughters “I[rene] Curie” and “Eve Curie,” on an off-white 6.5 x 8.5 album or guest book page. Page is additionally signed by 19 others, including: Harriet Ide Eager, author; A. Emily Napieralski, influential Polish figure in Chicago; Marie Mattingly Meloney, journalist, editor, socialite, and organizer of a fund drive to support Curie’s research; Henri Didot, French publisher and engraver; Herbert N. McCoy, chemist and author; Myrtilla C. Lewis, wife of Winford Lee Lewis, US Soldier and chemical warfare chemist; and Edward L. Schaub, philosopher and editor. In very good condition, with uniform toning, paper loss to edges, and a few edge tears, lightly affecting some of the other signatures. Marie Curie would receive two Nobel Prizes, one in Physics in 1903, and a second in Chemistry in 1911. Her oldest daughter Irene, along with her husband, would receive the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radiation. Eve was the only member of the Curie family who did not pursue a scientific career, instead becoming a writer and journalist, and the only family member to not receive a Nobel Prize. Provenance: Estate of Lawrence Feinberg, papyrologist and specialist in ancient manuscripts turned antiquarian bookseller. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
