Description

Rare check written between ‘Ozymandias’ and his trip to visit Byron

Bank check, 7.75 x 3.5, filled out and signed by Shelley, “Percy Bysshe Shelley,” payable “to self” for £15, March 2, 1818. A couple unobtrusive creases to corners, cancellation notations passing through his first and middle names, and slight ink erosion to the recipient area, otherwise fine condition. This check marks an extremely important date for Shelley and his family, both personally and professionally. January 1818 saw the publication of his most famous poem, ‘Ozymandias,’ as well as the release of the immensely influential story written by his wife—Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Additionally, just ten days after writing this check the Shelleys would embark for Italy, where they visited with Byron. Shelley’s writing was reinvigorated and he published Julian and Maddalo later that year, a lightly disguised rendering of his boat trips and conversations with Byron; this poem marked the appearance of Shelley's ‘urbane style.’ In addition to its important date association, Shelley is rare in any autographed material. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
