Description

Letter to a fellow Constitution signer

ALS signed “J. Madison, Jr.,” one page, 7.25 x 7.5, no date. Letter to Edmund Randolph. In full: “I find that in consequence of a draught on the Treasury which I exchanged with Mr. Gou[verneu]r Morris for a bill on New York, that a surplus of £30 regular currency has passed into his hands. I have requested him to hand it over to you, whom I must trouble with a request to forward it by the first safe conveyance to Mrs. Carr of Goochland, and to transmit me her receipt for it whenever you may receive it.” Reverse bears an address panel to Randolph in Madison’s hand, as well as a docketing notation by Randolph. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a few fold separations, scattered toning, including a circular area to text from wax seal, a few small pinholes of surface loss, small tear to body from seal, and a rough bottom edge. A scarce example of Madison using his seldom-seen suffix. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
