Description

Harris and Ewing’s magnificent exclusive oversized portrait of Lindbergh after his 1927 transatlantic flight

Superb oversized vintage matte-finish 8.5 x 12 copyrighted Harris and Ewing portrait of Lindbergh after his successful transatlantic flight, signed in the lower right in fountain pen, “C. A. Lindbergh.” Nicely double-matted and framed to an overall size of 14 x 17.5. In very good to fine condition, with an edge tear to the left of his head, a small stain to right edge, and subtle silvering to dark areas of the image. Accompanied by a smaller, very rare unsigned period example of the same portrait, and an additional framed copyrighted Harris and Ewing photo of the Spirit of St. Louis arriving by barge back in New York City from Paris. Lindbergh’s flight was inspired by a $25,000 prize offered by hotel owner Raymond Orteig for the first aviator to fly nonstop from New York to Paris—by 1927 it had still not been claimed, prompting Lindbergh’s successful attempt in his Spirit of St. Louis. This magnificent photograph was the very first posed portrait of ‘Lucky Lindy’ taken after his return to the United States, showing the trailblazing pilot gazing boldly into the camera, the archetypal ‘conquering hero’ personified. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
