Born Bartolomeo Alberto Cappellari (1765-1846), he was Pope of the Catholic Church from 1831 to 1846. LS in Italian, signed “Gregorio PP. XVI,” one page, 8 x 10.5, January 31, 1835. Letter addressed to “His Royal Highness Duke August de Leuchtenberg” [son of Eugene de Beauharnais].
