Description

Extremely rare appointment of the first official US Assistant to the President, later named the Chief of Staff

DS as president, one page, 23 x 19, October 26, 1945. Truman appoints John R. Steelman to be a “Special Assistant to the President of the United States of America.” Signed at the conclusion by Truman and countersigned by Secretary of State James Byrnes. Document is affixed to an identical size mount. In fine condition, with some mild haloing to the bold text and a bit of scattered light toning and soiling. The white wafer seal is lightly toned, but crisp and intact. Steelman was the first Assistant to the President of the United States—the precursor to the White House Chief of Staff—serving Truman from 1946 to 1953. He was the longest serving Chief of Staff, holding office for six years, and the only such to serve the full term of a president. Truman presidential appointments are quite scarce, particularly for such high-level positions. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
