Choice ALS signed “L. M. Alcott,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.5, July 3, 1871. Letter to publisher James Thomas Fields. In full: “Once upon a time you lent me forty dollars, kindly saying that I might return them when I had made ‘a pot of gold.’ As the miracle has been unexpectedly wrought, I wish to fulfill my part of the bargain, & herewith repay my debt with many thanks.” In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds (one vertical fold passing through first letter of the signature). Due to her father’s chronic unemployment, Alcott grew up in poverty and her family incurred numerous debts—she saw her career as a writer as an economic necessity, driven by a feeling of duty to her family to provide economic security. Alcott had published Little Men earlier in 1871, and by June had sold over 50,000 copies—this tremendous success earned her the “pot of gold” and provided her with the ability to pay back her debt.
